I turned out in 1972
through local 332’s program. I have worked in the Santa Clara County
my entire career. During that time I was in business for myself twice.
This trade has allowed me to raise three children and to live in Gilroy
the whole time. For the first 19 years I worked mostly residential, the
balance of my years have been in the commercial arena.
My teaching career started 15 years ago, here at the JATC
under Jim Evans. During that time I have taught the first, second, third
and forth year curriculums, with 1 year spent as a full time instructor.
I was appointed by the JATC committee as training director of the Santa
Clara County Electrical JATC in the winter of 2002.
My goal is simple… my life has been spent
as an electrician and I plan to give back to our trade for years to come
in whatever capacity I am able.

I am a graduate of UC
Davis with a BA in history and a minor in Chemistry. I took my credential
classes at UC Davis in 1972. I joined the IBEW local 332 in 1976, and have
been employed at Cupertino electric for the passed 25 years.
I have had the opportunity to experience many aspects of
our trade in this time, stemming from residential work to high-end commercial
facilities and high voltage substations. I am presently affiliated with
the service department of Cupertino electric and have been performing
service work for the last 10 years of my career as a journeyman electrician.
This has been a great experience for me.
I have been teaching at the JATC since 1981. I specialize
in teaching 2nd year curriculum as well as transformer theory. I am now
teaching 3rd year students encompassing the scopes of grounding and motor
control. I always wanted to be a teacher and am pleased at accomplishing
this goal through the trade I have become a part of. Its not often you
get to do what you love for so long a time.

My career as an electrician began
in 1981. Prior to becoming an electrician, I worked for 10 years at the
Ford Motor Company and served for three years in the U.S. Army as a microwave
technician working with the 101st Airborne out of Fort Bragg, N.C.
I started out in our trade working for H&H Electric, then was moved
to SASCO (then Valley), and Cupertino Electric. My last rotation as an
apprentice landed me at Rosendin Electric where I stayed for 16 years
until becoming a full-time instructor at our Santa Clara JATC. Throughout
my career as an electrician I've worked on several projects including
the Santa Clara Convention Center, Stanford University, the Bay Area Light
Rail, Hewlett-Packard, Agilent Technologies, and the San Jose Water Treatment
facility.
I have enjoyed working with people throughout my career and I hope to
continue to do so. I am an advocate of on-going education and hope to
instill in our apprecntices of the future the need to stay "current"
with all aspects of our industry long after they have graduated from our
program. |

I started my apprenticeship
through local 332 in 1979 and spent my entire career in the electrical
industry in Santa Clara County. After I turned out, I felt that I should
give back to the industry that had given me so much. I served on many
committees in the last 20 years including the J.A.T.C, E-Board, and
Political Action Committee. I have also served in many capacities that
pertain to electrical work in this county. I have been an apprentice,
J.W., Forman, G.F., City of San Jose electrical worker, and City of
San Jose electrical inspector.
I received experience in temperature control work while
working for Sasco Electric Controls. I then helped organize Air Systems
as an electrical contractor and became their first electrician. I left
ASI for a job as an inspector for the County of Santa Clara. Then, I
left Santa Clara for an electrician’s job at the City of San Jose’s
Street and Traffic Division. I am now an Inspector for the City San
Jose.
I became an instructor 5 years ago. At that time, I felt
that my varied experience in the electrical field along with my desire
to teach would be beneficial to the apprenticeship program. Since I
had been involved with programmable controls, instrumentation, and low
voltage wiring for temperature controls in my job, the material in the
5th year curriculum came natural to me. I now teach 5th year code. I
hope that by sharing my knowledge and experience, I will be able to
benefit the electrical industry. |

I entered the apprenticeship in 1958, at local 3 in New York City. I turned out and
worked in the New York worlds fair in 1964. I worked on high-rise housing
as well as office building there in downtown Manhattan.
I came to San Jose in 1977. I have been teaching at the Santa Clara
county JATC since 1995, after receiving my California teaching credential.
I’ve graduated form the New York state labor college in 1978,
and from the national training institute in Knoxville in 1998.
I currently teach OSHA 10, electrical safety work practices, a union
education class entitled “why unions?”, as well as preparing
future journeymen and women to take the state certification exam which
I passed in 2003.
I teach so as to give back to the local union some of the benefits
and knowledge that my family and I have received.
I retired from the field in May of 2001..

I entered the electrical trade as an apprentice in 1963. I was indentured into local
11 district 5 in Pasadena California. I worked in the greater Los Angeles
area until I moved to San Jose in 1968. During this time I worked in
all aspects of electrical construction - commercial, residential and
industrial. In 1973 I hired on as an electrician for the City of San
Jose and worked on traffic signals, streetlights buildings and pump
stations. In 1979 I became an Electrical Inspector for the City of San
Jose. During my years with the City I served as shop Stewart and was
on the negotiating committees for both the electricians and the inspectors.
I retired from the City in 1993. I retired from the IBEW in February
of 2003 with 40 years service.
From the time I graduated from my apprenticeship I enrolled in journeyman
courses both in Pasadena and San Jose. By 1973 I had taken every class
offered and was asked if I would like to teach in the apprenticeship.
I have been teaching electrical courses for 30 years. I am now teaching
a class on Preparation for the State Electrical Certification exam.
My goal is to teach courses through the JATC and help maintain the high
quality of our union electricians. This trade has been very good to
me and I wish to reciprocate in any way possible.

After growing up in Massachusetts where I graduated the University with a B.A., I moved to Southern California. I was fortunate enough to get into the Santa Ana Electrical Union Apprentiship Program, LU 441. I enjoyed being an apprentice so much; I was given the "perfect attendance" award upon graduating. I have lived all over the state of California with my family and have had the opportunity to work on some amazing projects like: Lumber Mills, Pulp Mills, Refineries, Oil Platforms, Power Plants, Newspaper Presses, Hospitals, Schools, Data Centers, and numerous other high tech locations.
In 1998, when I began using Computer Assisted Drafting- AutoCAD, I realized the future of the industry. With AutoCAD co-ordination, complex installations became easily understood and arranged.
I have had a great time teaching our Bay Area apprentices for over eight years both in JATC studies and AutoCAD classes. Here at the JATC our leadership has voted to outfit our members with state of the art computer labs, software, materials, supplies, and an outstanding faculty, where both young and old alike have the opportunity to learn and grow.
My desire is to ensure that specialized AutoCAD work is completed by skilled and experienced IBEW members. |
